Francis Marion Blackwater Creek Paddle
Variable
2-4 hours
Paddle through ancient cypress swamps where the water runs the color of dark tea and the silence is absolute. The blackwater creeks of Francis Marion are among the most atmospheric paddling in the Southeast.
The blackwater creeks of Francis Marion National Forest are stained dark by tannins from decaying vegetation, giving them the color of strong tea and a mirror-like surface that reflects the cypress trees above. Paddling these creeks feels like moving through a cathedral.
The forest was devastated by Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and has spent the past three decades recovering. The regrowth has created extraordinary habitat for red-cockaded woodpeckers, which are found here in one of their largest remaining populations.
Tips from the field
The Wambaw Creek Wilderness Canoe Trail is a designated water trail with marked access points.
Water levels vary significantly with rainfall. Call ahead to check conditions.
Bring a compass or GPS. The creeks can be disorienting in the flat forest.
