This is a two-for-one stop that takes about an hour and packs in a 100-foot waterfall and a 1,600-foot unfinished railroad tunnel. Both are inside Stumphouse Mountain Park near Walhalla, and both are easy enough for anyone who can walk a short path.
Issaqueena Falls drops about 100 feet over a rock face and is visible from a viewing platform just a short walk from the parking lot. The falls are named after a Cherokee legend about a woman who pretended to leap to her death to escape pursuers by hiding behind the falls.
Stumphouse Tunnel is a few hundred yards from the falls. Construction began in 1852 as part of a railroad route through the mountains but was never completed due to the Civil War. The tunnel extends about 1,600 feet into the mountain, and you can walk into the opening. It is dark, cool (Clemson University once aged blue cheese in here), and genuinely interesting. Bring a flashlight.
