Congaree Creek Heritage Preserve is a 938-acre preserve along Congaree Creek in Cayce, and it is one of the Midlands’ best-kept hiking secrets. The trails wind through bottomland hardwood forest that looks and feels like a smaller version of Congaree National Park, complete with massive trees, creek views, and a canopy that blocks out the sky.
The main trail is about 2 miles out and back along the creek, with boardwalk sections over wet areas. The forest is gorgeous, especially in fall when the hardwoods turn and the light comes through the canopy in columns. Spring wildflowers are excellent.
This is a quiet park. On a weekday you might have the entire trail to yourself, which is remarkable for a preserve this close to Columbia. The birding is good, with warblers in spring migration and barred owls calling year-round.
