Black River Paddle: Ancient Cypress & Dark Water

5 to 12 miles (varies by section)
Half day to full day
The Black River near Georgetown contains bald cypress trees dated to more than 2,000 years old. When these trees were saplings, the Roman Empire was still standing. Paddle right past them through tannin-dark water in one of the most atmospheric paddles in the Southeast.

The Black River near Georgetown contains some of the oldest living things in eastern North America. Bald cypress trees along the river have been dated to more than 2,000 years old. The river is slow, dark, and hauntingly beautiful. Classic Lowcountry blackwater: tannin-stained, quiet, and mirror-still on calm days.

The best paddling sections are upstream of Georgetown where the river narrows and the old-growth cypress corridor is at its densest. Put in at one of the public access points and paddle upstream as far as your arms allow, then drift back with the gentle current.

This is a Level 2-3 paddle because the river is remote, access points are limited, and you need to be comfortable navigating around submerged logs and through narrow channels.

Tips from the field

  • Morning paddles offer mirror-flat water and the best light for photography.
  • Bug spray is essential. The river corridor has serious mosquitoes from April through October.
  • Bring a dry bag for your camera. The photo opportunities are extraordinary.
  • Check SCDNR for current public access ramp locations before you go.
