The Folly River runs along the back side of Folly Island, separating the barrier island from the mainland marsh. It is calmer than the ocean side and offers a completely different perspective on the Charleston coast.
The paddle from the Folly River boat landing takes you through salt marsh with views of the Morris Island Lighthouse to the south and the distant Charleston skyline to the north. Dolphins work the river regularly. Ospreys nest on channel markers. The marsh grass turns gold in fall and the sunsets are extraordinary.
SUP works well on the Folly River in calm conditions. The river is wide enough to be interesting but protected enough to be manageable for paddlers of moderate skill.
