The Battle of Cowpens on January 17, 1781 was one of the most decisive American victories of the Revolutionary War. Daniel Morgan’s Continental Army, outnumbered and outgunned, defeated Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton’s British force in a battle that lasted about 45 minutes. The victory helped turn the tide of the war in the South.
The battlefield is preserved almost exactly as it appeared in 1781. The 1.3-mile battlefield trail loops through the open ground where the battle was fought, with interpretive markers at each key position. The visitor center has excellent exhibits on the battle and the Southern Campaign of the Revolution.
The trail is flat, paved, and accessible. Free admission as a National Park Service site.
