The Ultimate SC Road Trip: Mountains to Coast in 5 Days

South Carolina is a small state with an extraordinary range of landscapes. You can stand at a Blue Ridge waterfall in the morning and eat shrimp on a Lowcountry dock by evening. This 5-day itinerary covers the whole state, from the Upstate mountains to the barrier island coast, with real adventures at every stop.

Day 1 — The Peaks: Walhalla and Table Rock

Drive: Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway (SC-11)

The most scenic drive in the Upstate. Runs along the base of the Blue Ridge through state parks and small towns.

Day 2 — The Peaks: Jocassee and Caesars Head

Afternoon: Caesars Head Overlook

Drive to the overlook for views stretching to the horizon. If energy allows, hike Raven Cliff Falls Trail.

Evening: Travelers Rest

Dinner in Travelers Rest. The Swamp Rabbit Trail connects Greenville to Travelers Rest if you want a sunset ride.

Day 3 — The Midlands: Columbia and Congaree

Morning: Saluda River Float

Cold, clean water, gentle current. The easiest float in the Midlands. Tubes available at outfitters.

Evening: Columbia

Stay in Columbia. The Vista neighborhood has good restaurants and walkable streets.

Day 4 — The Coast: Georgetown and Charleston

Evening: Charleston

Drive to Charleston. Walk Sullivan's Island beach and Fort Moultrie. Dinner in downtown Charleston.

Day 5 — The Coast: Edisto and Beaufort

Morning: Botany Bay Boneyard Beach

Fallen trees on the beach. One of the most photographed and unusual beaches on the East Coast.

Afternoon: Edisto Island Tidal Creeks

Paddle the marsh creeks of one of the least developed barrier islands on the coast.

Sunset: Hunting Island State Park

End the trip at Hunting Island. Walk the beach at sunset. Climb the lighthouse if you have the energy.
