How first-come camping works here
First-come, first-served means no reservation. You show up, find an open site, and claim it. At fee sites you pay on arrival. At free sites you just set up and say hi to the whip-poor-wills. Three rules keep you out of trouble. First, the Forest Service caps camping stays at 14 days. Second, sleeping in your car or van counts as camping, and the Forest Service does not allow RV or car camping as dispersed camping. If you're rolling in on four wheels tonight, you need a designated campground or campsite, like the ones below. Third, big-game hunting season runs through fall and winter, and several of these camps double as hunt camps. Wear blaze orange in the woods, and expect camouflage neighbors who get up way earlier than you.
