National forests: campgrounds yes, pull-offs no
The Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests do not allow RV or car camping as dispersed camping. Dispersed camping means primitive camping at least half a mile from any road or parking lot, the kind you walk or paddle into. Translation: sleeping in your van at a random forest road pull-off is off limits. Sleeping in your van at a national forest campground is totally fine, and several are free. See our First-Come Campgrounds list for sites that don't need a reservation.
