Croft State Park covers 7,054 acres of rolling Piedmont forest on the south side of Spartanburg, and it is one of the most versatile trail parks in the state. Hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians all have designated trails here, and the park is big enough that you can spend a full day on the trails without seeing the same stretch twice.

The park sits on the grounds of the former Camp Croft, a World War II Army training facility. Remnants of the old camp, including foundations, roads, and a firing range, are scattered through the woods and add an unexpected layer of history to the trail experience.

The Foster Mill Trail (Level 2, 2.5 miles) follows Fairforest Creek through bottomland forest and is the most popular hiking trail. It is shaded, relatively flat, and passes through some of the prettiest forest in the park. The Southside Trail and Northside Trail extend the network into more rugged terrain with moderate climbs and rocky sections (Level 3).

Mountain bikers love Croft. The singletrack here is well-maintained, flowy in places, technical in others, and long enough for a serious ride. Equestrians have dedicated trails and a staging area. The park also has Lake Craig and Lake Johnson with a swimming area open seasonally.

Tips from the field

  • The Foster Mill Trail is the best starting point for first-time visitors. It is shaded, scenic, and manageable.
  • Mountain bikers should visit on weekday mornings to avoid trail conflicts with equestrians.
  • The park is 15 minutes from downtown Spartanburg. Easy to combine with a city lunch.
  • Summer mornings are best for biking before the heat builds.
