Last-Minute Camping on Lake Hartwell

Overnight
Didn’t make it to the mountains? Camp on Lake Hartwell tonight. How to book a same-day site at the state park and the Corps campgrounds off I-85.

Verified September 26, 2026 against SC State Parks and Recreation.gov.

Here’s the situation. You left Charlotte or Atlanta late, traffic on I-85 was a parking lot, and the mountain campsite you had in mind is now a pipe dream. Good news: you’re not going to make it to the mountains tonight, and that’s fine. Lake Hartwell is right there, and it’s gorgeous.

Lake Hartwell covers nearly 56,000 acres with 962 miles of shoreline on the Georgia line. It’s one of the most popular Army Corps lakes in the country. And it has two ways to grab a site on short notice.

Option 1: Lake Hartwell State Park

Just off I-85 at the South Carolina and Georgia border, this is your closest landing spot.

What’s there: 109 paved sites with water and electric hookups, and many fit RVs up to 40 feet. There are also 13 walk-in tent sites with tent pads. Every site is convenient to hot showers and restrooms, and the camping area gives you easy access to the shoreline. It’s also one of a few South Carolina parks with single-room camper cabins, so you can still sleep lakeside even if you didn’t pack a tent.

The same-day trick: You can’t book tonight online. For a same-day stay, you have to contact the park directly. So call the park, ask what’s open, and ask what time you need to arrive. Online reservations have a two-night minimum, so ask about that too when you call.

Once you’re in: Grab a fishing rod and cast off the park’s shoreline, or launch at the public boat ramp in the morning. Hartwell’s fishing is famous across the state.

Option 2: Army Corps campgrounds

The Corps runs several big, well-kept campgrounds on the South Carolina side, all booked through Recreation.gov. Check the app for same-day openings before you exit.

Coneross Park. Take I-85 Exit 11 onto Highway 24 toward Townville. There are 106 campsites: 94 with full water and electric hookups and 12 primitive sites. Four comfort stations have showers, and there are two dump stations, a boat ramp, and two swim areas.

Springfield. Take I-85 Exit 11 onto Highway 187 south. There are 79 campsites with full water and electric hookups, showers in four of the comfort stations, a dump station, a boat ramp, and a swim beach. It’s one of Hartwell’s most popular campgrounds.

Oconee Point. There are 70 sites with water and electric hookups, including 30 and 50 amp service, plus showers, a dump station, a boat ramp, and a swim beach.

Know before you go: Reserved sites are held until 2 p.m. the day after the scheduled arrival, so don’t count on no-shows opening up late at night. The maximum stay is 14 days in a 30-day period. Each site allows up to 10 campers and up to 3 registered vehicles. Questions? Call the Hartwell Lake office at 888-893-0678.

Can’t get a site?

Head to our First-Come Campgrounds list. The free Andrew Pickens forest sites are about an hour’s drive into the mountains, so pack a headlamp. Or check Sadlers Creek State Park, another state park on Hartwell, with a phone call.

Make a morning of it

You’re here now, so stay a while. Paddle a quiet cove with our Lake Hartwell Kayak trip. Browse more lake ideas on our Lakes hub. And before you jump back on the interstate, find a local breakfast spot in a nearby small town instead of the drive-through.

Then go outside and play. The mountains will still be there tomorrow.
